The day started out trying to figure out which direction would be best to go, Ord River or Jackfish Bay, based on ice location on the lake. Yes, that is correct, we had ice on the lake for opening day and it is still here on Sunday morning. The quality of ice is not very good and it is now small enough where a shoreline is open on one side of the lake whether it be East or West. The interesting issue this morning is now fog. If you look on the webcams you can see that we are completely fogged in. Spring can be interesting to say the least.

However, you might be wondering how the fishing was yesterday. I can only say that it was one of the best opening mornings we can remember in some time. In fact, a comment made by one of our regular guests was "In the many years I have been fishing Perrault Lake at Manotak Lodge for opening week, we have never had better Walleye and Pike fishing, ever".

We do have to admit that we thought the fishing was phenomenal but did not want to sound like boastful lodge owners so we just listened to what our guests had to say. Another guest was very excited but frustrated at the same time. Him and his buddy went out for about 3 hours in the early morning to get Walleyes for shorelunch and came back to the dock with just one fish. They both have been to Manotak a number of years and I was slightly confused with their low catch. They must have seen to look on my face when I looked in their livewell only to see one fish. They told me that they had no problem eating something else for lunch because all of the close to 20 Walleyes they caught that morning were over 18 inches so they threw them all back. I almost fell off the dock when they told me this. Their largest was 29 inch.

Just to hit some of the highlights quickly: there were 6 Walleyes over 30 inches yesterday. Our first time guest Leroy, thought he was going to have the big fish of the day with a 31 inch Walleye only to get beat out by his wife, Judy's, 32 inch Walleye. Leroy stated that it is probably best that it happened that way. I told him I am staying out of that conversation. Chuck, another regular guest for many years caught 2 Walleyes over 30 inches in about 2 hours time. He actually seemed somewhat low key when he arrived at the dock and I told him that most people don't catch a 30 inch Walleye their whole lives. He is just a modest kind of guy.

Pike were also on an eating binge or should I say buffet. Over 50 Pike were caught yesterday with the largest being 38 inches. This should continue for some time as the water is so cold that they will be hanging out chasing all of the Walleyes coming out of the spawning areas.

Well, you get the picture. We will try and document fish reports on a regular basis as best we can.

We also want to thank all of our guests for releasing Walleyes over 18 inches. As you can tell, it is working out fantastic for the fisherie.

LIVE WEBCAMS

<itunes:author>Dave Becker</itunes:author>

Well, I know you all have been waiting patiently for our live webcams to be up and running so now your wait is over. We have them up and running.

I believe we may still have bugs to work out because it is taking me a bit of time for the cameras to load the videos but be patient. We would like some feedback as to what issues you are experiencing so we can tackle (nice pun eh?) the right problems.

As you can see there is still ice on the lake but it is very black. We are getting some rain as we speak so that will really help get rid of it. There is still a week before opening season so we are confident that ice will be gone. What that does mean is that we will be scrambling big time to get everything ready. The paddle wheel and canoe are ready to go so first come first serve for them.

Keep your posting/comments coming. Hope you enjoy the webcams!

We were told early on in our lodge career that ice-out should be assumed around May 5 plus or minus a few days. This actually has been fairly close in the past 13 years even considering that there have been afew extremes with one year very early and one year very late. This year obviously will not be on the early side but we are confident that ice-out will come before August. Just kidding. The forecast is calling for warmer temps by this weekend and for rain. Snow can melt very fast and that inturn starts to get the ice melting.

Linda and I are heading up to the lodge possibly end of this week and will put out a blog post on conditions at the lodge. We all wanted lake levels to be higher this year and that looks like it will happen.

One thing that we are contemplating this year is to organize a photo contest for best pictures from Manotak Lodge vacations. We are always looking for photos from our guests that we could use in our brochures and for our sportshow booths and on our website. The details for the contest are not final yet but get your digital cameras ready. Linda & I are not the most experienced camera people but we are going to try and put on our website some helpful tips for taking outdoor pictures such as people holding fish or beautiful Perrault Lake landscape. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated so post to this blog or send me an email: manotaklodge@gmail.com

That is all for now.

We are also excited to inform all of our guests that Earl & Patsy and Kenny & Dawn will be back this year to work for us again. They do a great job for us and we hope they do a great job for all of you.

We want to thank all who have post comments regarding any ideas or suggestions to help our guests coming to Manotak Lodge. They are great and we hope you keep them coming.

We also want to hear about any new baits or lures that you have come across that you might think will work for any specie on Perrault Lake. We had great success on Muskies this past Fall on Suicks, Bobby baits, Grandma's and Jake Baits. We have come across a distributor that gave us a great price on Suicks so we will have plenty of them in various color patterns. Let us know of any lures you like and we will see if we can find a supplier for the lodge.

We talked to a friend who lives in Dryden and it sounds like they still have quite a bit of snow and temps are still cold. It appears that ice-out will be in the normal date range of May 5-10 unless the weather changes quickly.

You might be wondering about the title of this blog. Linda and I have always tried to offer our guests all the advice we know of for a trip to Manotak Lodge to insure a great trip. However, we know there are many great ideas that our guests know of that we may not hear about. WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THEM! If you know of an idea that you believe might help a guest with their fishing trip to our lodge then we want to hear about it. It could be as simple as a way to pack your clothes efficiently, or how to pack your car better. Or maybe it has to do with travel arrangements to the lodge. Or maybe it relates to hotels in certain areas. Or whatever? We are always looking to improve the experience at Manotak and who better to ask then YOU! Give us your thoughts by commenting to this blog or sending me an email at: manotaklodge@gmail.com

We know we have mentioned this in the past but we are still looking for photos of your previous trips to Manotak Lodge. Send them to my email. Please make sure they are clear and good resolution.

We have talked to our guides in the past couple of weeks who live up near the lodge and they tell us that there is quite abit of snow so this will definitely help lift lake levels in the spring.

Linda and I are currently travelling around on the Sportshow circuit and so far the crowds are out in full force. Manotak Lodge has already been to St. Louis and Chicago and now we are in Madison WI from Monday thru Wednesday then travel to Des Moines and then over to Green Bay(I don't even want to talk or think about the Packers, those shnocker heads). We want to thank all of the new guests that have signed up at the shows and also to all of our current guests that have come out to the shows wearing all of their Manotak clothing.

We want to remind everyone that has signed up but maybe has forgotten to send a deposit that we are selling cabins very quickly and cannot hold your cabin so give us a call and talk with Linda. We don't want to be the bad guys but this is the time when everyone is looking to book their fishing vacation and we do not want to give your cabin away if you still want it for this upcoming summer.

We are thinking about designing a new booth backdrop banner for sportshows and need fishing pictures. We know many of you have sent pictures of your previous trips to Manotak in the past but if by chance you have maybe forgot, well this is your chance to possibly be a star and have your picture, or video enshrined in our booth. We need high resolution, very clear pics or videos. We prefer they be of you with a fish in your hands but scenery pics might be ok also. You can send them to the following email: manotaklodge@gmail.com

Please keep the comments coming. We enjoy hearing from you.

If there is a time stamp on this blog, you will notice that I am writing this in the wee hours of the morning because I just kept thinking about the stupid Green Bay Packer game that played out earlier tonight and could not sleep. I know, I know, you may call me a sore loser but "C'MON MAN! Do you think Pete Carrol is a stand up guy and will give up the win and hand it to the rightful owners of the game? Just a thought. OK, I am off the soapbox.

I have to say from a personal standpoint that the fishing at the end of the season was nothing short of amazing. I know what you are thinking, that here goes another lodge owner bragging about their fishing again. But let me tell you some numbers and then you can decide on your own. We usually start talking about Walleyes but this is all about TOOTHIE CRITTERS. Don't get me wrong, Walleye fishing was extremely good at the end and as an example we had one Father/Son group catch 32 Eyes their last morning in acouple of hours. Size ranged from small of 10 inches to medium of 24 inches. So this does not seem too bad, does it?

However, I believe the amazing fishing came on Pike & Muskie. There were many Pike in the 30-38 inch range the last few weeks of the season but the last week was something else. My good friend Mark started out with a 40 inch Pike right away in the beginning of the week on Saturday. Big John then catches a monster 51 1/2 inch Muskie on Sunday that was a real hog. But it did not end there. Mark (same Mark) caught a 52 inch Muskie within an hour of Big John's entirely across the lake from each other. Wait, I am not done. Mark (same Mark) then goes out and catches another 52 inch Muskie two days later with the same bait no less. Now if your counting, that is 1 Pike at 40 inches and 3 Muskies at 52 inches. That alone is an incredible few days fishing if you ask me. But, I am STILL not done. Mark has proceeded to catch 3 more Pike between 40 & 42 inches all in the past 3 days. The final count is 4 Pike at or over 40 inches and 3 Muskies near 51 to 52 inches all within 7 days of fishing. Ok, am done now and will let you decide if this is good fishing. And, there are pictures!

Linda, our staff, and myself again want to thank all of the fishermen and women who chose Manotak Lodge for their fishing vacation and we hope it gave you some great memories. We look forward to your return in 2013.

MANOTAK FISHING REPORT

<itunes:author>Dave Becker</itunes:author>

It is hard to believe that it is August already but time passes fast when you are catching fish. And we are catching fish. I actually could just copy my last blog in regards to what is happening with all species. Walleyes are still really active with most being caught on the reefs or humps as we like to call them sometimes. We are starting to go slightly deeper for Eyes with 18-22 feet being the target depth. One exception where Walleyes might be slightly shallower would be my favorite place to fish and that is The Sandbar. We are catching Walleyes there at 14-18ft. Glitter jigs are still a great choice for Walleyes but I will be honest and say that the bite is so good that any color will work right now. Leeches are the bait of choice with crawlers right behind and minnows being a distant third.

Pike are also active but the big guys were slightly scarce. We had quite a few in the low to mid 30's but nothing over 40 inches. It is hard to beat the previous weeks Pike fishing with young Matt catching 38", 43" & 44" Pike all within a few days of each other. That is in addition to many in the 30 to 36 inch range also. There seems to be 2 patterns emerging for Pike. The first one is fairly traditional and that is to cast weedlines with spinner baits, rattle trap type baits and spoons. The second method is to troll our reefs or humps with slightly larger stick baits like Bucher shallow raiders, grandma baits, Jake baits or Thunder Sticks. The first method can produce big fish but there is no doubt it will show more numbers of fish. The second trolling method might not produce alot of numbers of fish but it appears to bring up the bigger fish.

It is easy to say that Smallmouth Bass fishing is at an all time high right now. I know I mentioned in previous reports that Bass fishing was really good but what is better than really good? I know, really really good. We had one couple, Dave & Cheryl, tell us this week that this was by far the best Walleye and Bass fishing they have had in years in coming to Manotak Lodge. I was glad to hear that they caught alot of fish because it softened the blow of Dave losing his new St Croix rod that Cheryl gave him for Christmas. We need to teach Dave how to hold the pee can and the St. Croix at the same time. Leeches are by far the bait of choice but we are still getting quite a few Bass on cranks, and spinners.

Muskie fishing has slowed somewhat in the past week or two. We have caught afew on the smaller side but Big John who has been here 4 weeks so far pulled in a 46 incher the other day. He has seen a few nice fish but nothing monster hooked as of yet.

Perch fishing is about on the same par as the past few weeks. Not great but not bad either. If you work at it you can get your limit of big slab Perch but you will catch 5 to 10 times the number of fish for what you will end up keeping. In other words, you will catch 20 Perch but only keep 3-5 of the bigger 10-13 inchers. You have to travel many spots around the lake as we have not caught the larger guys in one particular spot. One of the better days were the Smith's who caught 48 monster Perch on their last day here to finish their limit.

On a seperate note, we have our pet duck Lunch back at our dock again after a long hiatus. She brought along her girlfriend we call Decoy and they are eating us out of alot of bread at the moment. It is good to have her back.

We hope you are enjoying our webcams and we also hope they are easier to view with the many changes we have made recently. We know there are still a few times when they will not load but we believe they are better than in the past.

The weather has turned cool today with rain showers or misting for most of the day. It is supposed to be sunny tomorrow and in the 70's for temps. This is perect weather in my opinion.

That is all for now. Keep submitting your comments or questions.

MANOTAK FISHING REPORT

<itunes:author>Dave Becker</itunes:author>

The theme for this fishing report is "HOT". The fishing has been hot. The weather has been hot. And our guests say they are hot. A guest stated that even though the weather is hot, the beer is cold. Now there is a positive fisherman.

For about the past 2-3 weeks we have had very warm temps and not much rain to speak of. We know it has been very warm back in the States so we are not complaing too much. The evenings have been cooling down somewhat so it is not all that bad. The great news is that the fishing has been extremely good. We thought all fish would start to go deep especially Walleyes but we are still catching Eyes in the range of 12-16 feet. Surface temp of the water is around 75 degrees which is considerably higher for this time of year so we think everything should go deeper fairly quickly. The Mayfly hatch is over which is putting the fish bite back on a normal sequence. It was not a bad year for Mayflies and we believe the 2 days of higher winds about a week ago helped decrease the effects. During the hatch, Walleyes were tougher to catch during the day with morning and evening being better. Now, it is back to normal with Walleyes biting all day long. Cranking for Eyes is still working but there is no doubt that live bait is producing the majority of the fish. Nightcrawlers and Leeches are working the best for Walleyes but Minnows are a close second. Most all of our reefs are producing fish but some deeper points are still active. The Sandbar is in full swing for Walleyes and Pike with many Eyes over 20 inches. Our secret lure is still catching the majority of Walleyes so we are sticking to what works. One theme that is standing out considerably is that the size of Walleyes are bigger than ever. Many 18-24 inch fish are being caught with acouple over 30' boated. We greatly appreciate all of our guests throwing back all Walleyes over 18 inches and we know this is making Perrault Lake one of the best fisheries in Northwest Ontario. We know there are times when it is tough to find the smaller Eyes for a shorelunch but this is a problem we are willing to accept.

Pike have been quite active but the monsters have been elusive. We are catching many in the low to mid 30 inch range, but the over 40's have been scarce. We are seeing a few big fish follow baits but they are not biting. Normally, I would not think that higher water temps would effect Pike but it might be. We are changing our tactics slightly by targeting our deeper reefs to see if we can entice some of the hogs to bite. This is starting to work as two different parties this past week caught larger Pike and even Muskies on the reefs. The first Father/Son group fished mostly reefs yesterday with a Bucher Shallow Raider and boated 5 Pike all over 30 inches. The second group was fishing another deeper reef and had a Muskie come and follow there jerk bait around the boat for about 5 minutes. It would literally just swim around the bait and nudge it with its nose. They have it on video which we will try and post.

Bass have been on an absolute phenomenal run at the moment. Guests are consistently coming in saying they are catching 16-19 inch Bass. On a daily basis fisherman will tell us that it is nothing to catch 15-30 Bass in one fishing session with quite a few being 18 inches. Leeches are "killin' Bass but Rattle Traps & Mepps Spinners are also working very well. Some plastics are working but Leeches will definitely outfish any rubber bait. Go figure.

Without a doubt, this is the best year ever for numbers of Muskies caught. I believe it is safe to say that almost every day a fisherman tells us they have caught a Muskie. While most of the fish have been on the smaller size, the number of fish caught tells us it will be a great future for the toothy critters. I can even go one step further for the higher numbers of Muskie this year. I was at the dock last evening when Chris, one of our guests, caught about a 22 inch Muskie right off one of our floater docks. It was an absolute beautiful fish and actually put up a pretty good fight. In our 12 years at Manotak Lodge, this is the first Muskie we have caught off our dock. We have caught alot of fish off the dock but never a Musky. Chris's wife Jean has been coming to Manotak Lodge since 1959 starting as a little girl with her family and she believes this is the first Muskie off they dock. It could not have happened to a nicer guy than Chris.

We are still working on our webcams to get them more effecient so please be patient. It is becoming evident that trying to send this much live streaming video through our remote internet service is no doubt stretching the limits of the service available. Keep watching and we will wave every now and then.

We have had quite a few guests venture over to our remote Walleye lake and the end result is a day of countless, large Walleyes & Pike caught. This is an adventure that we hope everyone does because we know it will make a memory that you will never forget. Where can you walk through the bush to a remote lake, to fish all by yourself and catch monster Walleye? This is Canada at its best.

Linda wanted me to remind everyone that if you are thinking of a Fall September trip, you might want to give her a call or email. There are only a few spots left. September fishing is my favorite time of year and can produce some great fishing stories. It also helps that we are running a September Special with the first guest at regular price and the second at HALF PRICE! Try to find this good of a deal at any other lodge and still have the fishing like Perrault Lake.

Gotta go. We hope you enjoy this blog. We want to remind everyone to send us your pictures of your trip to Manotak Lodge. We are still learning how to work our new website but if we do not have your pictures, we cannot share your memories. So please send pictures to my email at: manotaklodge@gmail.com I might not be able to post all pics but will try and post a few. As a note, we are working with our website designer to possibly have a new Facebook page that our guests can enter their own pictures so you would not have to wait for us to post them. We have been spending alot of time at the dock taking care of trophy fish which leaves us little time to spend on the computer. (ok, ok, this might be stretching the truth alittle bit but not that much).

Linda and I want to thank all of our guests that have visited Manotak Lodge so far this year and also to the groups that are currently reserved for the rest of the summer. We have said it many times that Manotak Lodge has some of the best guests in all of Northwest Ontario. We are very fortunate to have the life we live and it is all because of you.

Stay tuned for another fishing report update soon. We are sure there will be more stories to tell.

Fishing Report

<itunes:author>Dave Becker</itunes:author>

Another week of fishing is in the books and no doubt there are stories to tell. The weather has finally turned for the nice and is allowing us to dry out. Our lake level was going up to somewhat of a normal level but has now stabilized or maybe even dropped a couple of inches. We should be ok if we get normal rainfall for the rest of the season.

In regards to the weekly fishing report it is always difficult for a lodge owner to judge overall what the weeks fishing quality was really like because it involves many fisherman's statements. I have said this many times that while one person believes the fishing was unbelievably fantastic, another thinks it was average. Which one is correct? Everyone this week caught very good fish and the theme was that alot of fish are over "slot" size making them too big to keep. I will always try to be as honest as I can so you get a very good idea as to what is happening on Perrault Lake and then you can make your own judgement when you arrive to fish with us. The one thing we will say is that everyone should have a good time based on the fact that you are on vacation at Manotak Lodge and not at work.

The week of fishing was interesting for Walleyes as they started out the week very good and then became somewhat elusive during the middle of the day as the week went on. We had our Mayfly hatch which we know contributes to the Walleye bite slowing down for a few days. Early morning and evening were very good with our secret lure still working fantastic. The great news is that the infamous Sandbar is kicking in big time and that is like music to my ears. We are still catching Eyes in about 10-16 feet of water and live bait seems to be the best for catching numbers of fish. Minnows, Leeches & Crawlers are all working with maybe Crawlers being slightly better during the middle of the day. Minnows always work better early and late evening. There is still some cranking going on for Walleyes but this seems to be best in early evening. Wanted to mention about Merles 31 inch Walleye he caught in the middle of the day yesterday along with the other 33 Eyes him and his future son-in-law caught. They believe the fishing this week was fantastic. When Merle sends me the picture we will post it on our site.

Pike fishing was maybe average to slightly above average for the week. There were some large fish caught but numbers were down slightly in my estimation. Don't get me wrong, you can still catch quite a few Pike during the day but we have such fantastic fishing for the toothy critters that we get alittle bit spoiled. The normal baits that you think will work for Pike are all working: Rattle Traps, Mepps Spinners, Buzz baits, Spoons. While casting in the preferred method most of the time, trolling can still produce alot of action.

Bass are in full swing now that they are done spawning. Large Bass are still the norm as 16-18 inchers are common. Leeches and crawlers are strarting to be the number one choice for Bass but the standard Tube or rubber tail type baits are still working. Small cranks are also good such as fat raps and shad raps. Topwater is still going strong and we hope this lasts as it is one of the best ways to make memories. There is nothing like a big Bass boiling the water at your lure. Everyone's heart starts pounding faster when this happens.

Muskie have slowed down from the previous few weeks but a few were caught this week. All we need to do is ask Patrick from Chicago how the Muskie action is. Patrick caught a 42 inch brute on light tackle while he was Walleye fishing. Based on all of the stories from the other fishernan that were close by and could hear all of the excitement, it sounds like Patrick got alittle bit excited during the event. Who wouldn't eh?

Perch fishing has been on the slow side for us. We are picking up a few bigger ones in the 10-13 inch range but nothing in large numbers. We thought the sunny days would really turn them on but they seem to have either gone deep or are gorging on Mayflies. It has not been a big Mayfly hatch so Perch should get back to normal where lots of numbers can be caught.

On other news, our remote Walleye & Pike lake has really produced some phenomenal fishing this summer. This can be some of the best fishing you will experience in your life so we hope all with give it a try while they are here at Manotak Lodge. Our remote Musky lake is also seeing some good catches this week. The Father & Son team of Rod & Art caught 3 Muskies yesterday in a short periond of time. There are not many lakes that will produce 3 or more Muskies in one day so this lake is very special to us and we are very fortunate to have fishing rights to this lake.

We are still waiting for our pet Hen Mallard "Lunch" to show up with her young ducklings. She has not been around for over a week so she should be showing off her new family very soon. We really enjoy the comments on our blog from our guests and we hope it continues. By all means share your stories or fishing experiences from your Manotak Lodge vacation. If you have any questions I would be more than happy to try and answer them.

Thats all for now. Off to the dock to shove off our "Crack of Noon" bunch for their day of fishing.

Now on to the latest fishing report. I usually like to start out talking about what fish were caught, where they were caught and what they were caught on. This time it makes more sense to start out talking about the weather because that is making big headlines. It started raining about 10 days ago and it really has not stopped. We have short periods during the day that we get a reprieve but it has either rained, drizzled or thunderstormed each day for the most part. The lake was quite low in water level but has since come up about 10-12 inches. We still would like the lake to come up another 6 inches to give us a comfortable margin for the rest of the summer.

Walleyes have been fantastic and are biting on all live baits and some artificials. Crank baits such as Hot N Tots and Shad raps are catching Walleyes in the evening while live bait such as minnows, leeches and worms are working all day long. The average size of Walleyes is up also with 20-24 being common. Our secret lure iss till working unbelieveably well and guests are impressed at its success.

Pike are also on a good bite right now. One of our guests, Chris, was fishing with his dad this week and hooked into a 39 inch brute. We are starting to hear that the fish might be gaining in inches as the week is progressing. We told him the general rule that fish usually grow one inch per 100 miles on the drive home. He thought that would work for his fish.

Sorry to cut this short but gotta run. Big fish were caught and need to get to the dock to hear all of the tales.

Will update again very soon. Somebody needs to send some sun. Our grass will need to be baled.

New Website & Fishing Report

<itunes:author>Dave Becker</itunes:author>

If you are reading this new blog then you obviously have seen our new website. We hope you like the new look and find it useful. We are still working out the bugs in the new site so if you find anything that you feel we missed or is not working correctly, let us know.

One of the main issues that we are currently working on is the reliability of our webcams to stay active. We know that they are not working all of the time and we have some options that we believe will help resolve this. The cameras take up alot of bandwidth to be able to upload live streaming video so we are working on an entire new system dedicated solely for the webcams. We know they are a big hit as we see alot of hits everyday so we appreciate your patience.

We cannot believe that we are already into our 4th week of the fishing season. As most of you have read from our previous blog post the winter and spring periods were very warm and dry. The lake levels were considerably lower than normal for this time of year which warmed our lake temps up higher than normal. The weather the past couple of weeks have really been quite opposite in terms of temps and humidity. Last week was very hot, dry and calm where as this week it is very cool, wet and windy. Fishing also was very different the past couple of weeks. Last week Walleyes were active very early in the morning and then again in the evening but were almost none existent during the day. This week they are on a more normal pattern and are biting all day long. In fact, Walleye fishing has been very good this week with size of Eyes being on the larger size. Our secret lure continues to dominate for Walleyes. Each week we are converting more guests over to our new lure for Walleyes and they are convinced they stand out. Even our guides are warming up to our new secret even though I am fairly confident they can catch Walleyes with a piece of a Walmart shopping bag tied to a jig.

Most of the Walleyes have been in 6-14 feet and are still on most rock points. Our reefs are starting to kick in with alot of the larger ones being taken there. Crank baits have been very popular but live bait is definitely outfishing artificial which is no surprise. Many guests have heard me say that I would rather eat a real apple compared to a wax apple anytime. Walleyes are the same way, they like live bait over artificial most of the time.

Bass & Pike have been absolutely fantastic right from the start of the season. Bass came up from the deep very early this year which allowed our fisherman to crank for them with rattle traps and the like. Flukes, Tubes, & Bass Assassins are also killin'em on the rocks. It has been common to hear guests talk about catching 25-40 Bass in one particular outing. They have been on the beds the past few days and we beleive they are just done spawning. Many Bass in the 16-19 inch range are being caught on a regular basis. Topwater is in full force also which personally I think is some of the most fun fishing you can experience. We are very lucky to not only have incredible Wallaye fishing but also have some of the best Smallmouth Bass fishing in North America.

Pike have really been on the larger size this year so far. Live suckers have been the most effective method for the big critters but trolling or casting Rattle Traps or larger type stick baits has also produced some great fish. We have seem thousands of small Perch Fry at our dock so we know Pike are on a feeding binge and we are taking advantage of it.

We have seen more Muskies caught this year at this time than any other season. The largest caught was 48 inches and was caught on 6 pound test line. The season is not officially open so all of the Muskie caught were by accident and on light tackle. This makes for all the more fun when a big monster grabs your small bait and takes you for a ride.

I think I better stop writing for now and get back to the dock.

Comments to this blog are greatly appreciated. Don't be shy. We think this is a great way for our guests to communicate and tell everyone about there experiences at Manotak Lodge.

Speaking of fishing, we want to remind people about the ability to buy your fishing license and Outdoor Card on-line. This is a great option to get your fishing license ahead of time instead of waiting at the lodge. The reason I say "Waiting at the lodge" is because we will have a new electronic license system here at the lodge and we are already hearing about some small bugs in the system. We hear this is translating into longer time periods for each license. We know with any new system there are kinks to be ironed out but the on-line purchase of a fishing license and outdoor card is simple and fast. Linda & I purchased ours yesterday and it was a matter of 5 minutes each. Here is the link for the website that you would go to: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/OC/2ColumnSubPage/STDPROD_091032.html
If there is a problem with this link let me know by posting a comment on this blog or send me an email at: manotaklodge@gmail.com. One suggestion we have is that when you are instructed to print your receipt, that you also save that final E-License and Outdoor Card form somewhere on your computer in case you need to access it later. We are not sure how to get a duplicate other than making a copy from the original one that you printed. We also made multiple copies and stashed them in various places such as tackle boxes, luggage, vehicle, etc. so just in case it gets wet, we have another copy handy. If the on-line purchase does not work for you or you still want to buy your license at the lodge, that is no problem either. We will have them available here.
We have very exciting news and that is our pet duck Lunch is back and in rare form. She was swimming out in front of the dock and I talked to her for all of 3 words and she came running in for bread. She ate out of my hand right away. The next day Linda and I were working all the way up behind our garage and she walked up from the dock and stood there looking at us like where the heck have you been, I am hungry. This is 5 years straight she has been coming to our lodge. It made us think that she has a pretty good gig going here with free food and no deposit ever paid. I have to admit that any worries that I had in life just left me when she showed up. We will be turning on our live Webcams very soon. We thought all of you would get some enjoyment out of seeing the ice on the lake melt and leave but that obviously is not going to happen. We will try and look like we are very busy when we are in front of the camera. If we are carrying fishing poles and tackle boxes and leaving the dock in a boat, don't worry we are still working. We are doing research for our guests prior to your visit. This is a tough assignment but we are up to the challenge. Well, that is all for now. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment in this blog or email. We really hope comments come in so we can keep a Manotak dialogue going.

The Walleye fishing is only 49 days, 15 hours, 2 minutes and 45 seconds away so get that gear ready. If you have been following the weather most of you know that it has been extremely warm up at the lodge. Reports from our contacts up there are saying that alot of smaller lakes are opening up and it won't be long before the ice is out on the larger lakes like Perrault Lake. This is good news as it makes it easier for us to open up the lodge in the Spring but lake levels are still very low and we need rain. We know that everyone wants good weather when they are there fishing but we really do not like low water levels based on the dock logistics. In regards to "New News", there are a couple of things to report. The Canadian Gov't is reviewing the policies of an individual trying to cross the border into Canada with a DUI. When we first heard the rumors that there might be some "Easing" of the policies we were very excited. We have since recieved a letter from MP Greg Rickford - Kenora (I am not familiar with the organization in Canada as to which office he holds) informing us that an person with a DUI offence of 5 years and older, that recieved no jail time, and has been in good standing with the law since then that they will recieve a one time exemption into Canada and will not be charged a fee. I am paraphrasing alot of the details of the letter so it will fit into this blog but this is good news. I know the first question you are asking yourself is what happens in the future after this one time exemption. We are of the understanding that the Canada Gov't still wants you to apply for a permanent waiver. I will be sending out Greg Rickfords' letter to all of our fisherman who have signed up to receive our newsletter. You can sign up by going to our homepage and clicking on the brown box that states "Sign up for Newsletter".
We also wanted to remind everyone about our Fall Special in September. Maybe you could not make it up in the early part of the season because of schedule conflicts or maybe you are thinking about a second trip to Manotak Lodge. This would make it easier on the pocketbook as our Special involves the 1st Fisherman is regular price and the 2nd fisherman is HALF PRICE. Any plan is available: Housekeeping, Evening Meal or American Plan. If you have never experienced September fishing you will want to try it. It is my favorite time to fish Canada. Cabins are filling very quickly so call us soon. We will be turning on our Live Webcams very soon after we arrive at the lodge so stay tuned. Thats about it for now. We will be blogging more often now that the fishing season is fast approaching.

I have always tried to keep this blog about Manotak Lodge and fishing but I want to make one exception at this time if you don't mind. My mother passed away this past week and it really put things into perspective. Linda & I are very very lucky to not only have our own families to rely on during these times but to also have our Manotak family. My mother passed away from a long battle with cancer and it makes a person think about making sure that we experience all we can in life when we can. We were very fortunate that she had a chance to come up to Manotak and catch one of her favorite fish: Walleye. She taught me well. This sounds simplistic but the next statement is true: Go fishing with family and friends: SOON & OFTEN. You all should remember that we promised to give away a free trip to Manotak Lodge based on one of the winners from this past summers MANOTAK MASTER ANGLER CONTEST. From a random draw of names the winner is: TOR SAILE. We want to thank all of the fisherman this past summer for fishing hard to win but you know you are all winners because you fished at Manotak Lodge (OK, so we are biased alittle bit).
We have made some changes to our website and one of the changes that we are excited about is the new Welcom Video on our homepage. Take a look and let us know how we did. Yes, we were reading our lines but, hey, we are fisherman not actors. I think Linda looks great. This welcome video gave us another new idea that is coming soon. It will be another video so stay tuned. We would also like to thank everyone who commented on Trip Advisor and for the great reviews. We are now number 1 in reviews for Ontario fishing lodges. These reviews are very important for new guests and we are very appreciative for the comments.
We want to mention that weeks are really filling up fast so if you are on the fence about coming up to Canada to fish with us, please give us a call or email. It is only 106 Days, 1 hour, 32 minutes and 45 seconds until opening of the fishing season at Manotak Lodge. Can you feel the jerk on the line. Can you smell the Walleye frying in the pan. You are not dreaming, it happens at Manotak Lodge. Remember to watch for our Live Dock Video Cam starting in early May. I promise to blog more often.

Linda and I hope everyone has had a great Thanksgiving holiday and are now getting your Christmas fishing wish list organized. We thought we would post with some of the latest Manotak news. This is going to be a fairly lengthy post so grab a cup of coffee (or a beer) and enjoy.
First things first: GO PACKERS! – GO BADGERS! It is fun to be a cheesehead at the moment. Two exciting games this past weekend that will gray anyone’s hair in a blink of an eye. While there are many other great teams, we know down deep that you are all rooting for the Packers and Badgers. Just as you all pulled for Jeff Gordon in Nascar this Fall.
On to Manotak business. The 2012 Sportshow season is right around the corner and we truly hope that everyone can come out and visit us in our booth. Please wear your Manotak Lodge shirts and hats as we have no problem “showing off”. We are very close to finalizing our sportshow schedule and will post on our website very shortly. We do know that we will be in St. Charles Chicago, Milwaukee WI, Green Bay WI, Madison WI, and St. Louis MO.
If you have not finalized your dates for coming up to Manotak this summer, give Linda a call and she can discuss all details. If you have not sent in your deposit as of yet, we ask that you do this within the next week. We normally ask that deposits be received by Thanksgiving so that we know what dates we have available when we get to the sportshows. It is always a difficult situation for us when we don’t hear from a group and we believe they still might want to come up fishing. We don’t like to give your cabin away but we also don’t like to get caught with an open cabin for the summer. We prefer that you send a personal check for the deposit. We still accept credit cards but have instituted a small fee for processing. Send all deposits to: Manotak Lodge PO Box 318 New London, WI 54961
Something that we started late last year and have decided to keep it again for this year is our HALF PRICE FALL SPECIAL. First fisherman is Full Price and the second fisherman is HALF PRICE! This is for September only. We have always tried to promote Fall Fishing as it is one of our favorite times to fish in Ontario. The weather is usually fantastic and the fish are stacked up on the reefs and on a feeding binge for winter. We know that we are competing against other outdoor sports in your home states such as bow hunting, grouse, ducks, etc. but once you experience September fishing in Ontario you might not change to any other time. Hopefully this incentive will convince you.
Another enticement that we would like to mention is our rental home in Panama City Beach Florida. We have been offering a 10% discount to any Manotak Lodge fisherman to come down and experience the beautiful white sand beaches and the phenomenal deep sea fishing. Our home is available from May through October and you can get more information on our website: www.manotak.com
All of you that were at Manotak Lodge this past summer know that we ran our MASTER ANGLER contest again and it was a great success. You should also remember that each week’s winner was to be eligible for a free trip to Manotak Lodge in 2012. We will be selecting randomly ONE winner at one of our Sportshows coming this January. Stay tuned to our blog as we will announce which show we will draw for the winner. We hope to video tape the drawing and will place it on our website. Speaking of videos on our website. We have started a Manotak Lodge – Facebook page which you will see near the bottom of our website homepage. Most of you that know me, know that I am not the most proficient at computers and are terrible at updating even our blog on a timely basis. However, we hope that this new FACEBOOK link will be helpful for our guests and will allow all of you a chance to communicate everything Manotak. I promise to do my best at submitting news on a semi-timely basis but I also challenge you to submit your comments and to post pictures and videos. Please only Manotak related items.
We hope that our new WEBCAMS that we installed at the lodge and dock this past summer were enjoyable to our guests. Based on comments we believe they were a big hit and we hope to have them back up and running when we arrive in the spring of 2012. One note for Dave in California: we do not take any responsibility for getting hypnotized by the cameras and ignoring your family. Our advice is that every now and then just back away and say hello to your wife.
Well, that is all for now. Sorry for this posting being so long but we have not posted anything in a while and thought we should get caught up. We will be posting our end of year newsletter very shortly so look for that on our website.
HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO TALKING WITH YOU AT THE SPORTSHOWS OR SEEING YOU AT MANOTAK LODGE THIS SUMMER.
Regards,
Dave & Linda Becker
We want to thank all of our guests this year for choosing Manotak Lodge as their fishing destination. We had another fantastic year of fishing and we hope everyone has great memories that will last them until next year when they return. I have to admit that we have been slightly behind in reporting for our Manotak Master Angler Winners. I also have to admit that I have a good reason and that is that I was out fishing, ALOT. The fishing has been so good the last month that I could not resist. I would like to acknowledge the following winners that brought our season to a great finish: Ken Keegan, Dale Stephens, Gary Borkowski, Mark Melius (two time winner) and Brian Burbach. We want to thank everyone that participated and we hope everyone had fun and maybe even learned a thing or two. Based on all of the feedback it looks like our live webcams are a hit. We know that they are slow to load at times but this is somewhat understandable as we have had over 1000 people trying to view the lodge at one time this summer. We will be shutting them down for the winter very soon but expect them back up and running again next April or May. For any hunters out there that are looking to take advantage of a great bird hunt, you should be thinking about Grouse hunting here in Northwest Ontario. The numbers of Grouse are always good and this year was no exception. Start planning now for next year, slots book quickly. Again we want to thank everyone who fished with us this summer and we look forward seeing alot of you again next year. We will be posting our upcoming sportshow schedule for 2012 soon on our website so come out and sit with us in our booth. Potential new guests always like to hear about Manotak Lodge from people who have been there and experienced it first hand. Besides, who would believe lodge owners that think Manotak Lodge is the best lodge in NW Ontario. I guess there is a fine line between bragging and promotion??? Stay tuned to our blog site as we will update new posts with any news for the cupcoming season.

I had to rub it in just a little bit. We also need to update the Manotak Master Angler winners for the past few weeks. We would like to congratulate Tor Saile, Gary Borkowski & Mark Melius as Master Angler winners. They are all guests who have been fishing at Manotak Lodge for a few years so they definitely have it figured out where the fish are. It helps that they are all good fisherman also. Tor brings his two sons along with him, Tyler & Tanner. We are not sure who fishes harder, the kids or dad but we do know that Tyler and Tanner are very good fisherman. It is exactly what Linda & I had hoped would happen at Manotak and that is to promote fishing to the younger generation. Gary & Mark are very good friends of Linda and I who originate from our home town. GO PACKERS - GO CHEESEHEADS! See their pictures at right.

Onto the fishing report. Walleyes are still on a great bite. Reefs are the place to be if you want Walleyes! They have not gone as deep as we thought they would at this time of the season especially for how hot it has been this summer. We are catching Eyes in the 14-22 foot range with Minnows & Leeches an equal choice for bait. Nightcrawlers are working but minnows and leeches are catching more fish. I have snuck out fishing the last two evenings and have absolutely pounded Walleyes by Twin Islands, Sand Dunes & Sandbar. Last night as an example I was fortunate to boat over 20 Walleyes in an hour & a half. My ego enlarged my head so big my hat would not fit. I can mention one secret weapon that I came upon for Walleyes for the past two days of fishing: Gold Glitter Jigs. A vendor stopped by the lodge and asked me to try his newly painted jigs that were covered in gold glitter. I guess I am like most fisherman in that I was skeptical but thought why not. They should give off a flash in the water which should help attract fish. Well, they have been red hot or should I say gold hot. I fished with Earl my dockhand and he could not believe how many fish I caught compared to his jig. Last night same thing. I fished right next to one of our guests, Craig from Denver, and he finally had to ask what the H_ll I was fishing with. He caught one to my 12 Walleyes. I have to admit that there are absolutely no problems in the world when you are catching fish. I sure wish the foreign countries that are fighting right now would come over and fish for one week and change their attitude. They can fight it out for the Manotak Master Angler Award. Pike are on a strange bite at the moment. One day they are jumping in the boat and the next day they are no where to be found. We can always rely on Pike to give action through most of the day if Walleyes are finnicky but I guess this is fishing. Yesterday was a slow day for Pike while today was fantastic. Gold spoons were good for one of our cabins that fished close to the lodge. They caught 12 pike in 2 hours time. Bass are not on a good run, they are on a phenomenal run at the moment. Leeches and Nightcrawlers are pounding Bass one after the other. Without bragging, it is common to have a guest tell us that they caught 25-40 Bass in a short days time frame. 15-19 inchers are very very active at the moment. Reefs where Walleyes are hanging out are very active for Bass as well. Some of the deeper points are also very good. Muskies are increasing in activity but we are not knocking them dead by no means. Mark & Gary who I mentioned earlier fished for them fairly actively and saw afew in the lower to mid 40's. I was fortunate to see a brute that would have definitely been over 50 inches strike one of my 17 inch Walleyes as I was bringing it in the boat. Needless to say my heart lodged in my throat for a fraction of a second. Muskies will only get better as the season progresses. Unfortuntely I do not have great news for Jumbo Perch. We are catching lots of Perch but not able to find the bigger ones on a consistent basis. I have been saying this for the past month without finding a solution. We have seen streaks of glory where a guest will catch maybe a dozen larger Perch and then they just dissapear the next day or even that afternoon. We ask our guests to keep only 9 inch or larger Perch so that they have a good meal of fillets. We appreciate this greatly.
In other news at the lodge, we have been greeted by our pet duck Lunch and her offspring. All 10 of them. They have been eating us out of house and home. They are averaging about 3-4 loafs of bread a day. We love it! In fact, another flock of ducks has shown up to take advantage of the free meals. At one time we had 18 ducks eating right out of our hands. We also found out that one flock of ducks don't like another flock of ducks. We thought we were in the "Hood" and there was going to be a gang war. Ducks were chasing each other and biting at each others tail feathers. Absolutely Hilarious to watch. We also hope you are enjoying our Live Webcam. It has been a great feature to the lodge. Guests tell us they really like watching from home and seeing what is happening here or what the weather is like. We are really close to starting up another camera right at the dock. Everything is close to being installed and should hopefully be up and running this week or maybe next. Stay tuned, literally. Don't forget about our new Fall Special where one fisherman comes for full price and the next fisherman is half price. This starts in September when it is my favorite time to fish. It may be yours also. Well, that is all for now. Sorry for the delay in reporting but I know you will cut me some slack when you know I am out fishing and doing it for a good cause. Maybe that should be our new slogan: Fishing for World Peace!

Our first woman has won our Manotak Master Angler Award. Betty Smith took this past week honors with big fish in each category. Betty is a hard fisherwoman who deserves this win. Congratulations to Betty. Betty's husband Ken won on a previous week. I do have to mention that Betty probably owes all of the big fish that she caught to her son George who knows all of the fishing spots by heart and is a great net man. I know first hand because George netted one of my Walleyes one evening. And one more thing. It took Betty 5 weeks to win while Ken won right away. (could not resist that little jab). Betty's picture is on right.
The second big news story is the MONSTER Walleye caught by Ron Abel this past week. A 34 inch behemoth. Yes, this is no typo: 34 INCHES LONG. The great thing was that Ron was with his wife Cindy and son Matt. This is the longest Walleye that we know of in our 11 years as owners of Manotak Lodge. There have been alot over 30 inches but not many close to 34 inches. Ron and his family were here for two weeks and caught a tremendous amount of fish and definitely deserve this trophy for the time spent on the water. And the absolutely best part of the whole story is that Ron released this fish. He said he thought about if for less than 10 seconds about whether to keep it and quickly decided to let her go. We are now checking with our taxidermist about getting a long enough mold for a replica mount.
Congratulations to Ron and check out the picture on right.
Will update fishing report soon but the good news is that fishing has been very good and the better news is that the SANDBAR is in full swing for Walleyes. As everyone knows, the Sandbar is one of my favorite places on earth so I am a very happy fisherman.

This past weeks winner is Bill Rathke (picture on right). Everyone caught big fish for the week but Bill was hard to beat. 28 inch Walleye & 36 inch Pike are a pretty good combination. The weather is still quite dry and there are still alot of fires north of us. We have had a small amount of rain but nothing that will remove the fire ban that is currently in place. The fishing has been very consistent with big Walleyes being the norm. Quantities of fish are decreasing slightly but the size of Walleyes are remaining on the larger size. The reefs are definitely the place to be with early morning and evenings being the best time for Walleyes. The Sandbar is in full swing with last evening being very good. One boat caught 7 Eyes in 13 minutes. I am not sure why they were timing themselves but that is a good catch. Pike are still very active and there are some larger Pike being caught but the big boys are being found on the reefs alongside Walleyes. We did have one group that caught quite afew Pike on jerk baits and we have since started working them along weedlines and reefs. We will let you know how they work out. Bass are still one of the most active fish biting right now. It is common to see a number of 15-18 inch Bass caught in a short period of time. Leeches are definitely the best choice for the larger Bass.
The Jumbo Perch have been elusive. We are catching Perch but the bigger ones have been harder to find. Will keep you posted if we find the pattern for big Perch. Musky are being caught on a more frequent basis as of late. Most of our guests have been keying in on Walleye, Pike & Bass but they are catching a Musky or two in the process. August & September are always our best months for Musky so with the warmer weather to date we should see more action. Our remote Walleye/Pike lake has been on a good run lately. Big Eyes are the norm and the walk is very dry with our current weather.
We have recieved a few business cards for our Manotak Business Center Board at the dock so keep sending us any information regarding your business, or items for sale, etc. We also hope you are enjoying our live Webcam. So far it has been alot of fun hearing the positive comments from family and friends back home watching the fisherman here at the lodge.
Stay tuned for more updates shortly.

This week we are congratulating Chris Alberts for reaching the pinnacle of the fishing world: "Manotak Master Angler Winner July 9-16". We might be laying it on alittle thick but none the less a great achievement. Chris caught some nice fish and also benefited from our unique handicapping system. We might change it up this next week. Any suggestions are appreciated. The intent is to make it fun and at the same time allow everyone to at least have a shot at the big prize.
It is also worthy to note that Chris's wife Jean has been coming to Manotak Lodge since 1959. It is extremely fascinating talking with them both to hear all of the stories such as the guides who fished for Manotak Lodge, or the boats and motors used at that time. And even the first private owners, King & Marge Johnson. Times have sure changed (a GPS unit in those days was an anchor dropped over the side of a boat to a certain depth until it hit something. An underwater camera was the guide telling the youngest in the boat to dive down and see what is underwater for fish). We might be spoiled in that regard but we still cannot make the fish bite on command.
We hope all of you have found our new WEBCAM on our website and have found it to be a fun thing to use. All of our current guests have found it to be a great thing just to call home and have relation or friends see them live at our lodge. Kinda strange to see people standing in the yard talking on a cell phone waving in mid-air.
Fishing this week was very good and also interesting. Walleyes have been very big almost to a fault. Guests are trying to catch shorelunch size Walleyes and are catching alot of "Eyes" well over 20 inches consistently. This is a great problem to have and we are not complaining. Manotak's policy about releasing all Walleyes over 18 inches is really paying off big time. Our guests have really become great stewards of promoting the release of big fish and they are reaping the benefits. We hope this is happening at all lodges.
The reefs are producing the most Walleyes at the moment and the best bait has been Leeches and Nightcrawlers. Dragging a Bait Walker, Crawler Harness, or Spinner rig is the best option.
Pike are being caught in good numbers but the size is down slightly this week. Mid-30 inchers were caught but the 40 inch plus Pike were elusive. Rattle Traps, Spinners and Spoons are still working best. Why change when they are working, right?
Bass are really on a roll at this time. Leeches are working great but Rattle Traps, Tubes & Flukes are still a good choice. Deeper reefs are now starting to kick in for Bass and we know that Walleyes are always right behind.
Jumbo Perch are being elusive at the moment. We are cathing Perch but fewer larger ones. This has been the pattern for the past two weeks. We think they are going slightly deeper and we have been fishing too shallow. Will let you know.
Our remote Musky Lake has been up and down for success. One day we will catch 5-10 Muskies and the next day 1 or 2. This is fishing and there is no predicting what will happen on any given day but the fisherman who hit the lower count day are being worked over pretty hard by the larger count fisherman. Fisherman don't have egos do they?
On a side note: we will be selling some older 20hp Yamaha 2 stroke engines. They range in the 1995-1998 vintage. They run great but we just do not use them any more as we have mostly all 4 stroke. If you are interested let me know and we can discuss via phone or email.
Keep watching the WEBCAM and we hope it keeps you excited to fish Manotak Lodge. Tune in on Wednesday evenings around 9:00-9:30pm and see our latest Master Angler be crowned).
Until next week: Hooks Sharp, Lines tight, Net ready, Camera focused!

The Master Angler contest is still going strong with Matt Rau winning the last week of June and Ken Smith taking the honors this past week. Congratulations to Matt & Ken and to all the anglers who fished hard.
Walleyes are on an interesting bite right now. We are having absolutely moments of unbelievable fishing at times and then a slow period. As an example, last Wednesday the daytime was fairly slow but the evening saw catches of over 40 Walleyes in a 2-3 hour period. These different patterns are happening each day where the bite is really slow in the morning and then fantastic in the evening but then the next day it might switch. We know this is the way fishing is sometimes but we are trying to get a good handle on a pattern. The even better news is that the size of Walleyes are really big. Chris & Jean from Chicago this past Friday caught "Eyes" of 27", 24", 22", 21" & 19" in just one spot in a short period. This is a recurring theme. Baits of choice are still live bait with Leeches & Minnows being the first choice with Nightcrawlers a close second. Cranking for Eyes with small baits such as Fat Raps, Hot"N"Tots, are still working well but not as fast as live bait. The early evening has been best time for cranking Walleyes.
Pike are on a consistent bite at the moment. This pattern is more normal where we are finding them on the weed edges cruising for Perch and on the deeper reefs chasing Bass & Walleye. Perch colored baits such as Rattle Traps and Mepps spinners are working really well in addition to any crank bait that is Blue & Silver. Consistent Pike in the 30-40 inch range are very common. One interesting fishing story from last week was Mark from Illinois had tagged into a monster Pike over in Grassy Bay and had it fly out of the water acouple of times. Another boat from over 300 yards away saw the fish and came over to watch the fight. Unfortunately, the big brute Pike won the battle when it snapped Mark's line. They all said this fish was way over 40 inches. I am sure the fish story now being told has this fish now estimated at probably 60 inches plus(not that fisherman lie about length of fish).
Bass are still on a fantastic bite right now. Topwater is still in full swing along the rock piles. Our Master Angler contest had Bass in the 16-18 inch range consistently. Leeches are the preferred live bait but the smaller Rattle Traps and Crank baits shaped like a crayfish are working well.
You probably remember when we said that this has been the best start to Perch fishing in our 11 years of being at the lodge. Well, I should have kept my mouth shut. This past week was more spotty for Perch than previous weeks. Some fisherman caught a mess of larger Perch but they really had to work for them while others were only catching the smaller ones. Numbers of Perch are still good but the larger slabs were more elusive. This is our best time for Perch normally so we will keep you posted.
Musky fishing has been about average this past couple of weeks. We had a couple in the mid-40's but did not crack the 50 inch mark. We had 2 musky "hunters" this past week and they caught a few and had a couple nice follows but it was not over the top. August & September are usually our best months but our waters are warming up pretty quickly so we think the action for Musky will speed up. Our remote Musky lake however is on a fantastic run right now. Catches of 10-14 Muskies caught in one boat in a day was not unusual. We highly recommend a day at this lake when you are here at Manotak Lodge for your vacation.
Speaking of remote lakes, our walk-in Walleye & Pike lake is unbeleivable at the moment. Huge size and lots of quantity is the norm on this lake. We hope that all of our fisherman take advantage of this remote lake and experience Canada fishing at its best.
I mentioned in our last Blog that we had some exciting news coming in the near future. Well, we are confident that Monay or Tuesday we will be able to announce what it is. Keep an eye on our homepage on our website of http://www.manotak.com/ We hope you will enjoy it.
In addition, we have our Manotak Business Center board up at the dock for our guests to promote their business or if they want to sell something. You are more than welcome to send me an email: (manotaklodge@gmail.com) stating your business that you offer, or of something that you would like to sell. I will print it off and post on the board at the dock. This past couple of weeks have really produced some monster fish. As an example, just this past week there were countless Walleyes over 25 inch with a common theme being that the "Eyes" are too big and we cannot find any small enough for shore lunch. This week is only one day old and already we have had a number of fish between 25-29 1/2 inch. The reefs are really kicking in big time so this will be alot of fun each day listening to the fish stories.
Pike have been on a binge with 30-40 inchers being caught each day. Just ask 5 year old Tanner who battled a 30" toothy critter and won. Topwater Bass is in full swing. I was fortunate to sneak out fishing Friday night and threw a Skitter Pop for a short time and had a few boils. There is nothing more fun than to have a large Bass explode on your bait. (I also snuck out to my favorite place on earth, "THE SANDBAR" and caught 1 Walleye and lost two. Not a good ratio of catching to losing but this is just the start of a great relationship between me and The Sandbar. The Sandbar does not dissapoint)
I can only say one thing about the Perch fishing so far: INCREDIBLE!. In our eleven years of being at Manotak Lodge we have never seen so many large Perch this early in the season. Last week as an example was amazing. We are starting to catch them off our dock so this should be very interesting. We will keep our knives sharp.
The weather has been quite cooperative as of late. In fact, we actually need some rain to insure that it does not get too dry. There are some big fires to our East and had a day of smoke haze which always makes us nervous. The fire fighters here in Canada are some of the best so we know they will succeed. We are supposed to get rain tonight so this should help.
In regards to the exciting news I mentioned in an earlier post, we hope to announce possibly this week if all goes well. Will keep you posted.

Thats all for now. Heading down to the dock to help Earl. He is always on the go doing something.

We cannot believe that 3 weeks of the fishing season has passed already. The weather was fantastic before the season started and sure enough, as soon as the season opened the weather turned cool. Go figure. The fishing on the other hand was absolutely HOT. Walleyes were plentiful in Ord River, Rainy Lake & in front of Jackfish Bay right from the start. Not much was happening out on the main lake at first but slowly you could see Ord River slowing and the some of the main lake areas improving. Ord Bay, East Bay, Camp Island, Twin Islands, Snake Pit, and Rainy Lake just to name a few are hitting Walleyes now at a pretty good pace. Minnows are the live bait of choice with nightcrawlers coming in a close second. Trolling crank baits have been producing some big Walleyes but have not caught the numbers of fish as live bait has. Depth of Walleyes have been in the 7-14 foot range. Pike have been nothing short of huge. I can truly say that guests have been catching Pike repeatedly in the 32-38 inch range with "eater snakes" harder to find. Don't get me wrong, this is a great problem to have. We have also cracked the 40 plus inch mark a few times already this season on Pike which is not unusual. Most of the Pike have been coming on live suckers but Mepps Spinners & Husky Jerks are working really well also. We can say with all confidence that this is the best start for Smallies and Perch since Linda and I have been at the lodge. Huge size and numbers of both Bass & Perch are common. We know the Smallie fisherie is one of the best in North America and so far we are proving this to be true. We already have topped the 20 inch mark on Bass and 17 to 19 inchers are becoming popular. Flukes, Tubes, & small Rattle Traps have been the bait of choice so far. We have tried Leeches but have not had as much success as of yet. They will kick in soon. As mentioned, Perch have been unbelievable in size and quantity. We normally don't even think about Perch until maybe mid to late June. What a bonus to see fisherman catching good numbers of Perch in addition to Walleye, Pike & Bass. Minnows & Crawlers have been working for Perch but seeing as how everyone is catching them we thought we would experiment with a very-unconventional bait to see if they continue to bite. This could be big news!
We also need to bring you up to speed on our MANOTAK MASTER ANGLER CONTEST 2011. The winners are so far: Mike Shulze - WI. May 21-28, Ray Ragsdale - MO. May 28-June 4, & Dave Beamon - NC June 4-11. We have changed the contest slightly for this year with a new grand prize that we think will challenge any fisherman to stay out and pound the water. We are still throwing in a few twists just to make it more interesting. I will post all of the winners pictures shortly.
We are still accepting names for "Lunches" new mate the Drake Mallard. Keep the names coming. She has been coming in less frequent as we believe she is nesting but I can usually call her from the dock in the evening and she will come and pay a visit and get her daily fix of bread. I did have an interesting question asked to me this week and that was why I was not feeding "Lunch" seasoned bread. While I was not amused at first I did have to admit this was brilliant. Maybe we should direct those briliant ideas toward catching more fish. EH?
Thats all for now. Stay tuned, more to come.
